GODMANCHESTER – Walk around the Nature Reserve

Until we got a dog I am embarrassed to say I didn’t even know that Godmanchester had a Nature Reserve and like Paxton Pits it’s loads of lakes that seems to have been created by excavation but it’s a nice walk from Godmanchester out around the lakes and back.

It’s a nice circuit of about 3 1/2 miles that can easily be extended as it allows access to The Ouse Valley Way and brings you out at the end of Cow Lane allowing easy access to Hemingford, St. Ives or Houghton.

From our office head straight over the road into Chadley Lane and down to the Church. Along the right hand side of the Church Yard is a pathway that will bring you out near the cricket field and on the other side of the field is the walkway under the A14 that will lead you out to the first of the lakes.

When you have passed under the A14 follow the path to your left. There is a footpath all the way around this lake if you just want a short dog walk but to get out to the Nature Reserve follow the path until you see the access out to the field over the timber bridge and through the gate.

Head along the fence to the other side of the field and up onto what was, once, the Godmanchester railway line from St. Ives. turn to you right and you’ll notice that you are on the Ouse Valley Way. There is then a sign to your left and across another field and into the Nature Reserve.

Follow this lake around to the left and you’ll soon have the lake one side and a river tributary the other. The Ouse Valley way disappears off to your left but for this walk carry onto the wooden style with sliding dog gate. You can now follow this track straight ahead and then round to you right and then left until you come to the gated area at the bottom of Cow Lane.

To head back to Godmanchester from here turn to your right and head over the small road bridge and almost immediately right again and through the gate. This pathway follows the old railway line again on the other side of the lakes and eventually brings you all the way back to where you first came out but instead of turning back across the field to the first lake keep walking down the old railway line to the end where the footpath sweeps left and under the A14 then around to your left and across the field bringing you out on Post Street, Godmanchester and if you walk down past The Black Bull you’ll end up back at our office.
